Contact Gaging

Our gaging system measures the diameter of ground parts from a centerless grinder and automatically provides compensation control to the grinder to maintain product specification.

The system uses a contact gage to accurately measure the diameter of each part as it exits the grinder. The measured diameter is compared to user-defined limits and the system automatically signals the grinder compensation when the part diameter is too large or too small.

A custom operator interface enables the user to easily define the nominal part diameter, tolerance limits, and the delay between compensation and re-measure. The display provides the operator interface and system control on a platform designed for use in harsh environments.

Non-Contact Gaging

The system uses a laser micrometer to accurately measure the diameter of each bar or part as it exits the grinder. The measured diameter is compared to user-defined limits and the system automatically signals the grinder compensation when the bar or part diameter has deviated from the mean.

The measurement is displayed on an industrial PC using large characters to allow the measurement data to be read from a distance. In addition, the background color of the measurement data changes to indicate the status of the grinder. For example, a red background alerts the operator that the bar or part size is out of tolerance, a yellow background indicates the bar or part has deviated from the mean and a compensation should be made, while a green background indicates a bar or part that is within specification. The system also displays a trend chart of the measurement data. SPC data can be collected and archived to a local disk for later analysis.

The use of this open system architecture provides a high degree of flexibility in the application as well as an ideal platform for future enhancements.
